October is Chaplain Appreciation Month, and at Vantage Hospice, we’re celebrating the dedicated individuals who offer compassionate support to our patients and their families.
A chaplain is a trained spiritual counselor who provides emotional and spiritual support to patients and their families, guiding them through the unique challenges of end-of-life care. Unlike traditional counseling, a chaplain’s role in hospice is rooted in a “ministry of presence”—meeting people where they are without judgment or expectation, offering comfort through listening, empathy, and companionship.
In hospice, chaplains are invaluable, helping patients find peace, reflect on their life journey, and foster connections with loved ones during this sensitive time. Chaplains walk beside families and loved ones, addressing spiritual questions, offering a calm presence, and creating a space for healing conversations. At Vantage Hospice, our chaplains play an essential role in offering comfort, companionship, and spiritual care to patients and their families. Our chaplain team understands that each individual’s journey is unique, and their approach centers around meeting people where they are—whether through prayer, listening, or simply being a comforting presence.
Meet our incredible chaplains through a series of heartfelt video interviews, where they share stories and insights about their journey in hospice care and the powerful connections they’ve made with patients and families.
Meet Chaplain Mark
Meet Chaplain Mark! Mark shares his thoughts on what makes being a chaplain so rewarding. For him, being a hospice chaplain is about building genuine connections and being there for people at one of life’s most sensitive times. Mark recounts a memorable experience with an atheist patient who initially declined chaplaincy. Through a gentle, non-judgmental approach, Mark was able to develop a bond with this patient, who later shared how much peace he found from their friendship. These connections illustrate the powerful, compassionate role our chaplains play in end-of-life care.
Meet Chaplin Charmette
Meet Chaplin Charmette! Charmette shares how her personal journey led her to hospice chaplaincy. While caring for her mother in hospice, Charmette felt a deep calling to serve others at the end of life, feeling a connection between her care and her faith. This inspired her to pursue a master’s degree in trauma counseling, specializing in grief, and to complete her Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training at MD Anderson, to deepen her skills, preparing her to serve people from all backgrounds and beliefs. Charmette’s story, from her first patient visit to meaningful experiences that confirm her purpose, reflects the deep empathy and connection she brings to her role. At Vantage Hospice, we are grateful for the compassionate presence she brings to every life she touches.
Meet Chaplin Rick
Meet Chaplain Rick! With 25 years of chaplain experience and 8 of those with Vantage, Rick has supported countless patients, families, and even staff members through difficult times. Rick shares a moving story about a man who initially resisted his presence but, in his final days, found comfort in Rick’s prayer, passing peacefully after getting his “two more days” to settle unfinished matters. Rick calls this work a “ministry of presence,” a role where just being there provides peace to those facing life’s end. Our chaplains, like Rick, embody compassion, always ready to provide emotional and spiritual support when it’s most needed.
As we honor our chaplains this month, we’re reminded of the invaluable support they provide to both patients and families during life’s most challenging moments. Their compassion, empathy, and unwavering presence make a profound difference in the hospice journey. At Vantage Hospice, we are truly grateful for our chaplain team and their unwavering commitment to enriching the lives of our patients and their loved ones. Thank you for joining us in honoring their important work!
